The village of Shap has had a Spring clean this week, organised by Shap Chippy . More than twenty people turned up in glorious sunshine and armed with litter pickers, gloves and bags from Eden District Council set off to clear the village of rubbish.
Shap Chippy owners Jo Hampson and Georgina Perkins were delighted with the result. “Shap is a well kept village anyway but there is always more that can be done” said Georgina. “We had so many children we were able to cover all the entry roads into the village as well as the residential areas. Everyone was so enthusiastic, it was great!” said Jo.
A total of twenty bags were filled with rubbish that included plastic bottles, hub caps and even an old Shap Chippy advertising sign from several years ago! “It was fun going for a walk in the nice weather and doing something good for our village” said 8 year old Ella Bindloss,
Linda Mather brought her grandchildren for the litter-pick and said “It’s good to give something back to the community. It’s quite rewarding seeing the lanes clean and it looks lovely with with the Spring daffodils – we really enjoyed it!” All the volunteers were welcomed back to Shap Chippy where they enjoyed a free lunch of fish and chips. Jo Hampson said “All of us at Shap Chippy would like to thank the children and adults for their help. We’ll definitely be doing it again next year – or maybe sooner!”
