Penrith and the Border MP Rory Stewart visited Shap Chippy last week to see what progress had been made since the re-opening in April 2013. “I visited before they had opened and Georgina invited me back once they had been open for a year.” Rory Stewart was introduced to some of the staff, shown round the premises and took the opportunity to sample some of their award-winning food.
Mr Stewart was impressed with what he found. “It is tremendous to see what had been an empty shell built into a thriving business. Shap Chippy is a credit to all the staff – “The Frying Squad” and can only be good for Shap – and of course for the hungry walkers on the Coast to Coast route!”
One of Shap Chippy’s achievements has been to reach the standard required for the Quality Award of the National Federation of Fish Fryers and Rory Stewart used his visit to formally present the certificate to owners Jo Hampson and Georgina Perkins. The standard is held by only 5% of fish and chip shops in the country.
He said:”Shap Chippy really is the most wonderful example of a small business, transforming the local community. The accounts from local residents of the difference Jo and Georgina have made to Shap since re-opening the fish and chip shop are really touching, and they should be proud of the hugely positive impact they are having.
And this is not a business model held together by rural or business grants. This is a business doing fantastically well on its own two feet; its success testifies to the drive and determination of two extraordinary individuals running the shop.”
